With the summer season coming to a close our Public Works Department is busy on many fronts. Numerous sidewalk repairs are underway on Halfway House Road, Center Street, Orchard Hill Drive, Sutton Drive, Oakridge Drive and Oak Street.
The paving of Fernwood Drive, Northwood Drive, Mabel Street and Poplar Street will occur in the September/October timeframe to finalize this project.
The reclamation/paving of Tracy Circle, Sutton Drive, Dale Street, Polk Avenue and a section of Reed Avenue between Ellis and Creston along with Reed Court will have the sanitary line replaced and roadbed resurfaced and will get underway in mid-September.
Engineering specifications for the Bus Shelter program have been finalized and are being reviewed by CT Transit and CRCOG with installation of the shelters on Route 75 and Schoephoester Road scheduled in the October - November timeframe. The shelter on Main Street will also be replaced at that time.
As a Town we continue to work through the funding issues in regards to the exit ramp project on Rt.20/Rt.75 on the east side of Rt. 75 The project has received a state project number. This state project entails reconfiguration of the exit ramp and the alignment of a frontage roadway to allow access to the land mass in back of the Quality Inn for future commercial/residential growth opportunities, and to alleviate some of the traffic congestion on the current corridor.
We have met with the State DOT and the engineering consultant STV, Inc. to start the engineering study of the train platform relocation to the center of Town. This phase of the project will get the project to a 15% build-up of the final design. The remainder of the design will take place when Federal and State funding becomes available. On a side note, we have received approvals from both AMTRAK and the Department of Transportation for the sale of the Historic Train Station to the Town and await The Federal Rail Administration’s final approval. This long awaited restoration project will get underway as soon as that approval is received.
The leaf dump is now open to residents to bring their yard debris and a separate area has been set aside for grass clippings. The site is open from 8:00am – 3:45pm Saturday and Sunday until December.
We have Food Share coming to the Town Hall every other week for the foreseeable future to distribute fruits and vegetables to those in need. They are at Town Hall every other week from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. We ask that you bring your own bags. If you need further information please call Christina at 860-627-1446.
Finally, many of you know that our Food Pantry was almost out of items this summer. As a caring Town you responded and the shelves are no longer bare. Although we have two major food drives in May and November, the need is ongoing throughout the year. We welcome walk-in donations to the food pantry and to our clothing closet on a continual basis. I would like to thank the Lions Club, the Girl and Boy Scouts and others who collected food items. Also, a very special thank you to our many residents who responded by coming forward to donate to their neighbors in need.
