Home of the historical Saville Dam, Barkhamsted Reservoir, and People's and American Legion State Forests.
Within the Barkhamsted Reservoir lies the foundations of Barkhamsted Hollow, an original portion of town that was purchased by The Metropolitan District Commission during The Great Depression. This area was intentionally flooded following the construction of the Saville Dam.
The center of town is Pleasant Valley which contains the Pleasant Valley General Store, the Barkhamsted Elementary School, the Drive-In, the Post Office, and the Town Hall.
Riverton is the other village in Barkhamsted, and contains a Post Office, and various shops and restaurants. The main street through Riverton is on the National Historic Register and contains many historic buildings. Riverton is also the location of the Annual Riverton Fair, which takes place in early October of each year. The Riverton Fair is the last fair of the year in Connecticut. The Still River and the Farmington River join together in Riverton, creating 4 miles of some of the best trout fishing in the country. Between Riverton and Pleasant Valley, there is a catch-and-release fishing area on the Farmington, which allows for year-round fishing for various species of trout.
In addition, the Farmington River provides excellent kayaking and canoeing, continuing down to New Hartford and beyond. The state forests have many miles of hiking trails and can be used year-round for outdoor recreation.
